MADRID – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will travel to London on Wednesday for his first bilateral meeting with UK counterpart Keir Starmer, in a visit set to showcase warmer post-Brexit relations.
The economy will top the agenda, with the two leaders expected to sign a “strategic agreement” – the first of its kind since Brexit – covering trade, climate, migration and investment.
Economy Ministers Carlos Cuerpo and Rachel Reeves will also join a high-level business forum aimed at strengthening ties with the UK, one of Spain’s main foreign investors.
The meeting comes two months after Madrid, London and Brussels brokered a landmark deal on Gibraltar’s post-Brexit status. The agreement would remove the physical border by 2026, eliminate checks on goods across territories, and boost trade, security and fiscal cooperation between the EU, Spain and Gibraltar
Sources close to the negotiations said a draft of the agreement will be published in October, with the final text expected by December 2025.
