LONDON — Get ready for plenty more pomp and ceremony in the United Kingdom. The coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023, Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday.

Charles ascended to the throne last month following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, but a formal coronation date had not yet been set.

In a statement Tuesday night, Buckingham Palace finally named the date, and confirmed the coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, the site of the queen’s own coronation and state funeral. It will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England.

“The Ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort,” the statement said, referring to Charles’ wife, Camilla Parker Bowles. “The Coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry,” it added.

Buckingham Palace is promising further details “in due course.”
