US forces say they have carried out another retaliatory strike against Iran. Several targets – including air defense positions, drone depots and surveillance infrastructure – were attacked, said the responsible regional command Centcom. The reason was an attack by Iran on a freighter.
It is the second US attack on Iran since the framework agreement between the two countries was signed in mid-June. It was only on Saturday night that the USA reported that it had attacked Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar systems from the air – in response to the attack on a cargo ship on Thursday.
On Saturday, the British merchant shipping safety authority UKMTO announced that a cargo ship had been hit by an unknown missile. The exact background to this incident initially remained unclear. According to Centcom, the ship was the Panamanian-flagged “Kiku.” The tanker left Qatar on Thursday and was on its way to the United Arab Emirates, the New York Times reported, citing a US official.
The Iranian state broadcaster Irib reported that night that the sounds of explosions could be heard in a village near the city of Sirik. A little later it was said that bullets had hit a communications tower. (sda/dpa)
