Three students were killed and at least five others injured in a gun attack at a school in the Philippines. According to police, the incident occurred in the morning (local time) at the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City in the east of the island state, around 575 kilometers southeast of the capital Manila.
Two suspects, 14 and 15 years old, were arrested, according to a police spokesman. They were both high school students. Where they got the firearms from is still being investigated. “The school has multiple entrances and exits, but only one security guard was on duty at the time of the incident,” the spokesman said.
In a video posted on social media, screams and students crying can be heard as shots are fired. The young people seem to be hiding under tables. Two male students apparently barricade a door before shots are fired again.
Investigations into the background
The identity of the victims has not yet been confirmed, the police said. Several injured people were immediately taken to hospitals and treated there, it was said. All schools in the surrounding area were initially closed.
The investigation into the background to the incident was ongoing. Police said they were working to identify everyone involved and clarify the motive. “Appropriate police measures will also be taken to ensure that those responsible are held accountable to the full extent of the law,” it said. The population was called upon to remain calm. (sda/dpa)
