The speedboat of a local tour operator capsized on Saturday off the coast of the largest Vietnamese island, Phú Quốc, in the Gulf of Thailand, the newspaper “VnExpress” reported, citing authorities.
It was said that the accident occurred just 400 meters off the coast in rough seas. There were 32 tourists and 4 crew members on the speedboat, all of whom fell overboard. Boats in the area helped with the rescue work, but many passengers were trapped inside the speedboat.
The rescue work and the search for the missing people were still ongoing on Saturday evening (local time). The Indian authorities confirmed the incident, but did not initially comment on the number of deaths.
Boat accidents are not uncommon in Vietnam. Last year, a tour boat capsized in storms in northeastern Vietnam. At least 38 people were killed. (sda/dpa)
