Recent Russian missile attacks on power plants across Ukraine threaten cities with blackouts, but many front-line communities have been under shellfire and without power or water for months. The town of Bakhmut, in the eastern region of Donetsk, is still held by Ukrainian forces, but its desperate residents have been within range of Russian fire since May. One of them, Oleksandra Pylypenko, is housebound because her husband, sick with lung cancer, “can’t even make it to the basement” to hide.
