Energy, energy, energy.
Yes, there will be other topics discussed at the EU leaders’ gathering on Thursday and Friday in Brussels, but one subject set to dominate is the gathering: how to curb Europe’s rising energy prices.
Heading in, EU leaders still appear quite divided. The European Commission earlier this week issued a raft of proposals to address the matter. But the offering mostly stuck to consensus measures — like better coordination on joint gas purchasing — and dodged contested steps — like a gas price cap.
The result is that all eyes will be on the countries supporting a price cap. Will they keep leaders around the table for hours and hours to push their point?
Other issues on the agenda include: Russia’s war in Ukraine, threats to Europe’s critical infrastructure, the latest on food security and the EU’s relationship with China.
