EU ambassadors Wednesday agreed on new sanctions against Iran over their arm sales to Russia, according to four EU diplomats, confirming earlier reports from POLITICO.
The new sanctions follow reports that Russia has used Iranian drones to strike civilian targets in Ukraine and may soon receive precision-guided Iranian missiles.
On Monday, the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said that the EU was still looking into “concrete evidence” of the participation of Iran in Ukraine. Since then, the Commission has proposed concrete sanctions, which EU countries have now agreed on. According to one of the diplomats, the sanctions will hit both Iranian individuals and entities linked to the drones.
The political green light by EU ambassadors is now followed by a written procedure. The new sanctions are expected to become official as of Thursday morning, the diplomats said, just ahead of the meeting of EU heads of state in government in Brussels.
