A few days before the start of the World Cup in Mexico, police in the capital seized 59 explosive devices. The authorities speak of a danger to the population.

How “T-Online” Reportedly, the explosive devices were found on a bus that protesters were traveling on to Mexico City. The Interior Ministry confirmed the find at the weekend.
Radical members of the teachers’ union CNTE are behind the protests. They are demanding the reversal of a controversial pension reform and have been demonstrating in the Mexican capital for days.
Protests cause tension
The demonstrators are blocking important traffic routes and have set up a tent camp in the historic center of Mexico City. There had already been clashes with the police last week.
Arturo Medina, State Secretary for Human Rights in the Interior Ministry, emphasized that peaceful demonstrations are a legitimate right. However, the use of explosive devices should not be tolerated as it endangers the population.
World Cup starts on Thursday
The discovery is adding to the nervousness as Mexico City hosts the opening game of the World Cup on Thursday. At the start of the tournament, hosts Mexico face South Africa. A big opening concert is planned beforehand.
It is not yet known whether security precautions around the World Cup will be tightened due to the discovery of explosives. (mke)
