This is part of an agreement with the victims of sexual abuse by clergy, several US media reported. The agreement was approved by a federal judge after years of negotiations.
There have also been countless cases of sexual abuse in the church in the USA. (symbol image)Image: keystone
The head of the archdiocese, Archbishop Gregory Aymond, told reporters outside the courthouse: “This has been a long process, not only for us, but especially for the survivors, to whom our prayers go out. We deeply regret what they experienced in the past.”
One victim told NBC station WDSU News:
“The pain and suffering that I have gone through will now make me a stronger and more confident person, and I will again feel like a winner who has passed this test.”
Archdiocese also needs to improve its alert system
According to the broadcaster, lawyers for the archdiocese said the money would be available for the victims before the end of the year. The agreement also stipulates that the archdiocese will improve its system so that law enforcement authorities are better informed in the event of sexual abuse.
Last October, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to a settlement totaling $880 million. At that time too, hundreds of victims were involved as a result of decades of sexual abuse by clergy. (sda/dpa)
