He should use his authority to take action against embezzlement and misconduct. But now the head of the authority, Ferenc Biro, is himself suspected of corruption.

The Hungarian public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation against the head of the national anti-corruption agency because of allegations of embezzlement. Ferenc Biro caused financial damage of around 400,000 euros to the authority he headed, the public prosecutor’s office in Budapest said on Tuesday. He is accused of abuse of office, forgery of documents and embezzlement on a large scale.
The allegations against Biro include renting a luxury car for his wife at the authorities’ expense, unlawfully restricting the powers of his deputies and hiring a Brussels-based consulting firm even though he had no mandate to do so. Biro rejects the allegations as “factually incorrect”.
Biro was first accused of corruption in January 2025. He described the allegations as politically motivated. The Hungarian anti-corruption authority was founded in 2022 as part of reforms to better control the use of EU funds. Under the pro-European government of Péter Magyar, which has been in office since May, its powers are to be expanded.
