The police assumed that most of the dead were employees of the club, as the newspaper “The Indian Express” and other Indian media reported, citing the police in the western Union state. The bodies were recovered.
The authorities suspected that the night fire was triggered by the explosion of a gas cylinder in the kitchen area of the club, the news agency PTI quoted the Goa police chief as saying. It was initially unclear whether there were any injuries.
The accident reportedly occurred in the coastal town of Arpora in north Goa, which attracts many tourists from home and abroad due to its beaches, lively nightlife and tropical climate. Winter is usually the peak season for tourism in India’s smallest state. (sda/dpa)
