A Republican senator is currently causing a stir in Washington. Bernie Moreno has introduced a bill that would ban dual citizenship. So far these are allowed. Millions of Americans, especially immigrants, are affected.

In his draft, Moreno requires that US citizens who have another passport have to make a decision. If they want to continue to be American citizens, they must give up their second passport. Many celebrities would also be affected by this, especially Melania Trump and her son, who both have American and Slovenian citizenship. Elon Musk, head of Tesla and SpaceX, would also have to lose his South African passport. Actor Tom Hanks has a Greek passport and Sandra Bullock has a German one.
Moreno, who was born in Colombia, said in his statement: “One of the greatest honors of my life was when, at the age of 18, I became an American citizen at the first opportunity I had. It was an honor to take the oath of allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY the United States of America! Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege – and if you want to be an American, you have to choose it. It is time to finally abolish dual citizenship.”
As the US magazine “Newsweek” reports, experts estimate that up to five million US citizens are affected. It is still unclear whether the senator will receive support for his plan. According to Newsweek, there are also legal hurdles. The Supreme Court had ruled that dual citizenship “is a status long accepted in jurisprudence” and that US citizens can only lose their citizenship by voluntarily giving it up.
