European Court of Auditors appoints Irish technocrat as new president

EU auditors elected Tony Murphy as the new president of the European Court of Auditors, the court announced Tuesday.

The Luxembourg-based court conducts audits into how European Union money is spent and how EU policies are formed.

Murphy, who is the Irish member of the court, takes over from Klaus-Heiner Lehne, who has served as president since October 2016. Lehne, a former German MEP, had come under pressure over alleged misuse of funds, for which he had to defend himself in front of the European Parliament’s budgetary control committee.

This time around, members selected a president with a more technocratic profile. Murphy has spent his career climbing the ladders of the court and also has experience at the Audit Board of the Council of Europe and at the European Investment Fund.

Murphy is elected for a three-year term, which is renewable.
